Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
