Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
