British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Film Deemed a 'Serious' Infringement of Media Standards, States UK Media Regulator

The British broadcaster engaged in a "significant breach" of broadcasting rules by omitting to mention that the presenter of a programme about the Gaza situation was the child of a Hamas administrator, according to UK media regulator Ofcom.

An probe by Ofcom into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has determined that the documentary was "significantly deceptive".

The chief executive of the broadcaster had earlier expressed regret, saying there had been "a serious error in relation to truthfulness".

The authority has ordered the corporation to air a peak-time statement about its findings.

"As this represents a serious breach of our rules, we are ordering the BBC to broadcast a announcement of our findings against it on BBC2 at 9pm, with a date to be confirmed," the statement read.

'Potential to Damage Credibility'

The regulator's statement declared: "The inquiry we conducted found that the documentary's omission to reveal that the voice's father served in a role in the Hamas-run authority was materially misleading.

"This implied that the viewers did not have essential details which may have been extremely pertinent to their assessment of the presenter and the content he provided.

"Confidence is at the center of the connection between a media organization and its viewers, notably for a public service broadcaster such as the public broadcaster.

"This error had the possibility to undermine the very considerable amounts of trust that audiences would have placed in a BBC factual programme about the conflict in Gaza."

The film was removed from iPlayer in February after the presenter's familial connections were revealed, and in this past July an internal BBC review concluded it infringed the organization's content policies on factual correctness.

A corporation official said: "The authority's determination is in agreement with the findings of the internal assessment, that there was a significant failing in the documentary in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on truthfulness, which corresponds to regulation 2.2 of the regulator's media standards.

"We issued an apology for this and we comply with Ofcom's decision in full. We will comply with the penalty as soon as the schedule and wording are finalised."
