Advocacy Group Claims to Have Scraped Millions of Audio Files from the Streaming Giant

A digital rights group has stated to have harvested millions of songs from Spotify and is preparing to release them publicly.

Potential Impetus for AI Training

Industry experts noted the apparent leak could aid artificial intelligence firms searching for material to develop their technology.

An entity known as Anna’s Archive said it had scraped 86 million audio tracks from the platform and 256 million entries of metadata such as artist and album names. Spotify, which carries more than 100 million tracks, stated that the leak did not represent its full catalog.

“We have identified and disabled the nefarious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” said a Spotify spokesperson.

The Stockholm-based service, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, further explained that an inquiry into unauthorized access identified a external actor scraped public metadata and used questionable tactics to circumvent DRM protections.

Archive's Stated Mission and Concerns

Spotify does not believe the audio acquired by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for offering links to pirated books, wrote in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

They claimed the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be shared via ‘torrents’, a method of exchanging large data files online.

“Naturally the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great beginning,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “preserving humanity’s information and heritage”.

AI Training and Copyright Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for protecting artists’ rights, remarked the leaked music would probably be utilized for training artificial intelligence systems.

“Educating models on illegally sourced material is sadly common in the tech sector, so this stolen music is highly likely to end up instructing AI models,” he stated.

The group's website makes references to a large online archive, a huge online archive of pirated books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to develop its AI models.

A founder of an AI startup posted on the professional network that individuals of the public could in principle “build their own personal free version of Spotify”. He added it could also allow technology firms to “train on modern music at scale”.

Copyright has become a battleground between creatives, authors and content creators on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Proposals and Reactions

Across Britain, artists and writers have protested against a government proposal to let AI companies utilize protected work without consent unless the rights holder signals. Virtually every respondent to a government call for evidence on the idea has backed artists’ apprehensions.

A government minister for technology, research and development told parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the issue, noting that ministers would “use the time to get this correct”. The government has pledged to make regulatory plans on AI and copyright by next year.
